The slip-joint plier is the plier of choice if you only had one to pick. It is versatile and can handle a variety of jobs ranging from tightening or loosening nuts to pulling small nails.

Slip-Joint pliers have two sets of teeth, fine and coarse. The fine teeth are found at the end of the jaws and are used for fine work like gripping small objects or nails or delicately pressing or holding things together.

The coarse teeth are use to grip larger objects or to increase gripping pressure because of the leverage gained by gripping something at the back of the jaws. These are the teeth you would use to grip a nut or bolt.

The feature that gives the plier its name however is the slip-joint characteristic of these pliers. The slip-joint allows you to move the handles apart slightly to increase the jaw size and enlarge the grip capacity of the pliers.
