Lock-Joint pliers are the atomic bomb in your toolbox. These pliers are usually made from high strength steel and were made famous by and are commonly called Vise-Grip® although that is a registered trademark of IRWIN Industrial Tools.

These pliers are like large slip-joint pliers on steroids. The jaws enlarge or reduce in size by turning the knurled knob at the back of the pliers. They are primarily intended for firm "vise-like" gripping of an object.

Once you enlarge the jaws to the proper size, you over enlarge them slightly with the knob and then clamp the plier together. The plier will snap into the clamping position and is held together with a strong spring and cam action.

To release the clamping action, you either push or pull (depending on style) the "release" lever at the bottom of the plier handle.
